Why Use Custom Fields?
Custom fields allow you to gather additional information from your customers during checkout.
There are no limits to what you can ask. For example, you can collect personal notes, color preferences, birthdates, phone numbers, consent to statements, and much more.
This can be useful, for instance, if you’re offering a personalized product that varies per customer and requires specific information. Or if you’re offering a phone appointment and need the customer’s number. You can also use a custom field to collect specific consent.
Enable and Create Custom Fields
The option Add custom fields to the checkout page is available for all product types except Direct Link.
When creating a new product, scroll to the very bottom of the product settings. If you’ve already created a product and want to add custom fields to it, go to your product overview, click Edit on the relevant product, and scroll to the settings section.
To create the fields and display them on your checkout page, you must first enable the option Add custom fields to the checkout page by checking the box.
Once enabled, you can create your custom fields.
For each field type, you can assign a title that your customers will see—this lets them know what information you’re requesting. For example, if you want to ask for a phone number, you can use something like Phone Number or a question like What number can we reach you at? as the title.
You can choose from the following 5 field types:
-
Short Text: For a brief, single-line input with letters and/or numbers.
-
Long Text: Displays a multi-line comment field for longer entries.
-
Dropdown list: Shows a dropdown menu with options you define.
-
Checkbox: A field that can be checked by the customer.
-
Choice Buttons: Displays several options; customers can choose one by clicking a dot.
You can also define whether each field is required, meaning customers must fill it out to complete their purchase.
For the Dropdown list and Choice Buttons, you must provide the selectable options. Enter each option in the Options field, using a new line for each one.
Don’t forget to click Save after creating your field(s), so they appear on the checkout page.
Display on Checkout Page
Your customers will see the custom field(s) under the section Additional Information on the checkout page. These appear below the Delivery Information and above the Payment Method.
