What is an Upsell and Downsell?
An upsell is an additional product shown to your customers directly after purchase, displayed below the order confirmation for their original purchase. A downsell, on the other hand, is a cheaper alternative shown to customers if they decline the upsell.
What Are They Used For?
Upsells and downsells are proven marketing strategies to increase the average order value. They allow you to immediately offer relevant add-on or alternative products to customers who have already made a purchase decision. This way, you can make the most of their readiness to buy and increase your revenue.
Creating an Upsell
First, open a product in your product overview, or scroll to the After Purchase section if you’re currently creating a new product. In the Thank You Page settings, activate the Upsell option.
Now, click the + Upsell button to create an upsell. A popup will appear where you can configure all the details of your upsell:
Offer Title
Enter an additional title here that will be displayed above your upsell offer.
Product
Select an existing product from your inventory that you want to offer as an upsell.
Override Product Title
If you don’t want to use the original title of the selected product, you can optionally enter an alternative product title.
Description
Use this field to explain the content and benefits of your upsell to your customers.
Image/Video
You can upload an image or video to visually show your customers what to expect.
Discount
If you want to offer your upsell at a discounted price, you can either specify a percentage discount or a fixed amount. Otherwise, select No Discount.
Decline Button
You can choose to show the default text No, thanks, or define your own custom text.
Don’t forget to click Save afterward so that all your upsell settings are saved.
Note: You can create an unlimited number of upsells and corresponding downsells. When a customer clicks the Decline Offer button, the linked downsell (if available) will be shown. If no downsell is available, the next upsell/downsell in the sequence will be displayed.
Creating a Downsell
Once you’ve saved your upsell, you can add a downsell to it. To do this, click Add Downsell in the gray section directly below the previously created upsell offer. The downsell uses the same settings as described above for the upsell.
Custom Thank You Message
Below your up- and downsells, you can customize the pre-written thank-you message. In addition to standard text formatting, placeholder elements are available to personalize the message for your customers.
How Upsells and Downsells Are Displayed to Customers
After completing payment, your customers will see the order confirmation. Below that, your upsell offer will be shown. If they click the Decline button, the downsell offer will appear (if configured).
If you have created multiple upsells and downsells, your customers will then be presented with further offers. If this is not the case, your customers will see your individual thank-you message.
